Overview

The Alberta Biodiversity Festival is a collaborative event uniting organizations, communities, and conservation efforts in celebration of the province’s diverse ecosystems. Following its renaming, the need arose for a visual identity and logo that could unify the festival under a recognizable, meaningful mark, reflecting both provincial significance and collaborative spirit.

Approach

  • Developed for the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo in partnership with Bow Habitat Station, the project required balancing multiple priorities: authentic representation of Alberta’s biodiversity, alignment with Government of Alberta brand standards, and clear communication of a joint mission.

  • Created a logo featuring a whooping crane—symbolizing terrestrial conservation and the Zoo’s Species Survival Plan—paired with a fish to represent Bow Habitat Station’s focus on aquatic ecosystems.

  • Combined these elements into a cohesive, flexible mark that visually conveys ecological interconnectedness and partnership.

  • Designed the identity system for longevity and adaptability, incorporating the Government of Alberta’s “Sunset” color palette and clean, modern typography from the zoo’s brand.

  • Ensured the visual identity could perform consistently across digital, print, and environmental uses, supporting both immediate recognition and future expansion.

Outcomes

  • Delivered a distinctive, versatile logo and supporting visual system that unifies the festival’s presence across all applications.

  • Established a brand identity that balances institutional, partner, and creative requirements without sacrificing clarity or impact.

  • Provided a flexible foundation for continued festival growth and evolving communication needs.

Impact

  • Strengthened festival recognition and public engagement year over year.

  • Supported a cohesive, mission-driven narrative for both organizers and audiences.

  • Enhanced collaboration and visibility for Alberta’s conservation organizations.
